WEEE/Batteries/Packaging - Online Platforms Request Registration Numbers

Concerns Amazon in Germany and France

If you sell your products via the online platform Amazon in Germany and/or France, you should prepare yourself for the query of the registration number(s) in connection with the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

The registrations from the areas of WEEE and batteries (stiftung ear) as well as packaging (packaging register LUCID) are affected. One of the reasons for this is the amendment to the Packaging Act in Germany, which came into force on July 3, 2021. From July 3, 2022, an extended registration obligation will apply to all companies that place packaging filled with goods on the market.

Amazon will provide the link to upload the EPR registration number(s) as early as the fourth quarter of 2021. From next year, the online retailer will be obliged to suspend non-compliant offers. In Germany, this will apply to packaging from July 1, 2022. Operators of electronic marketplaces/platforms may only allow packaging subject to system participation to be offered for sale if the manufacturer has system-participated it and is registered in the LUCID packaging register. For electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), the corresponding obligation for online retailers applies to all offers that fall under the scope from January 1, 2023.

In France, furniture, tires, paper and textiles are additionally covered by the EPR product categories.
