On September 21, 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published an immediate final rule (16 CFR 1263) to adopt by reference the previously voluntary ANSI/UL 4200A,- Standard for Safety for Products Incorporating Button Batteries or Coin Cell Batteries, approved on August 30, 2023 as the mandatory standard for consumer products containing button cell or coin cell batteries.
The CPSC is issuing this final rule to complete the requirements of the so-called Reese's Law for warning labels on button cell or battery packaging.
President Biden signed Reese's Law into law on August 16, 2022 (15 U.S.C. 2056e). The purpose of Reese's Law is to protect children six years of age and younger from hazards associated with the ingestion of button cells or button batteries under reasonably foreseeable use or abuse conditions.
The rule goes into effect on September 21, 2024.
