EU: The Ecodesign Directive is here!

Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 published on June 28, 2024

On June 28, 2024, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 of the European Parliament and of the Council of June 13, 2024 establishing a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for sustainable products (so-called Ecodesign Regulation) was published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
The regulation comes into force on July 18, 2024 and repeals the previous Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC (with some exceptions).

The Ecodesign Regulation goes far beyond the (previous) improvement of energy efficiency. It aims to improve the durability, recyclability, reparability and environmental compatibility of almost all products. It also aims to ensure greater transparency. The digital product passport (DPP) is intended to help consumers and companies make more sustainable product decisions and support the authorities in enforcing legal requirements.

The Ecodesign Regulation will apply to almost all product categories in the foreseeable future. Food, animal feed, medicinal products and living organisms as well as motor vehicles are excluded. The regulation itself only provides the framework. The specific product requirements will then be laid down by the European Commission in implementing regulations for individual product groups. As a rule, a transitional period of 18 months then applies.
