EU: New regulatory standards for wireless devices with USB-C charging interface

EU Commission writes the applicable standards directly into the Radio Equipment Directive

On December 07, 2022 there was the Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/2380 to the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), which requires the Unified Charging Interface (USB-C) for radio equipment. The requirement will be mandatory from December 28, 2024 for almost all devices except laptops. Laptops must comply with the requirements mandatorily from April 28, 2026.

The standards situation is a special feature here. There is no reference to harmonized standards for the technical requirements. The EU Commission has written the applicable standards directly into the Radio Equipment Directive! Will every change in the standards now lead to a change in the Directive? We shall see.

The Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/1717, published by the EU on September 11, 2023, amends the Radio Equipment Directive:

  • "EN IEC 62680-1-3:2021" will be replaced by "EN IEC 62680-1-3:2022"
  • "EN IEC 62680-1-2:2021" is replaced by "EN IEC 62680-1-2:2022"

This amendment comes into force on October 01, 2023 and there are no transition periods because this part of the RED does not have to be complied with until December 28, 2024.
This means we have standards that are required by law in the RED for the first time!
