CANADA: New developments in radio certification

Requirements for new radio technologies and device type designation

In Canada, more or less major changes have taken place in a few places in the radio approval process in recent months.

  • In February 2021, amended EMF requirements for new radio technologies were published by ISED (Innovation, Science and Economic Development) Canada in Amendment 1 to RSS-102.

Radio Standards Specification 102 (RSS-102 - Radio Frequency (RF) Exposure Compliance of Radiocommunication Apparatus, All Frequency Bands) specifies the requirements and measurement procedures used to evaluate the radio frequency (RF) exposure compliance of radio equipment intended for the use near the human body.

Amendment 1 includes changes for the new radio technologies (5G, WLAN 6 GHz, ...) that use the frequency range above 6 GHz. Findings and recommendations of the International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) were also incorporated into the amendment.
  • In June 2021, the change of the device type designation in the list "Type of radio equipment" took place, which you should consider in the formal assignment in the approval documents.

EXAMPLE: Previously, a Bluetooth device was a "Bluetooth Device." The new list references more to function. Thus, for new applications, the Bluetooth Device becomes an "Audio Sound System" or even a "Vehicle Entertainment/Network Device", from now on.

Actually all these lists have one problem. They are never complete. But the Canadian authority ISED has covered all the bases, one of the more than 40 types listed is called “other”.
