The draft law no. 6120/2019 aims to establish a national register of chemical substances in order to reduce the harmful effects on public health and the environment. The National Inventory serves as a strategic tool to identify and monitor chemical substances manufactured or imported in the country. It enables more effective risk management of these substances, promotes chemical safety and helps to align Brazil with international best practices for the regulation of chemical products. The approval process is expected to be completed by the end of October 2024, depending on when exactly the bill reaches the President's office, as only his signature is required.
Something is also happening with Brazil's RoHS legislation. After the RoHS Temporary Working Group was founded at the CONASQ meeting in March 2024 for a planned term of 6 months, it will now continue its work until the end of February 2025. The minutes of the meetings and presentations will be published on the website of the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change.
Background: The previous RoHS Working Group ceased its activities after 5 meetings in 2018. In summer 2018, it had proposed a draft law that was closely based on the European RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU.
